About Helen Heaviside

Helen is a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Her specific areas of expertise are expectations and media effects, both of which are currently being explored within her PhD research. She is also a Fellow of the HEA.

Helen studied her first degree in Sport and Exercise Science at Aberystwyth University. She graduated with first class honours in 2011 before moving to Leeds Beckett University where she completed a Masters in Sport and Exercise Science. She graduated from Leeds Beckett University with distinction in November 2012. Helen started her PhD at Leeds Beckett University in February 2013 and was appointed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in September 2013.

Helen has contributed to a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level including:

  8. Practicum (Level 7)

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Helen is a personal tutor and supervises undergraduate dissertation students.

Research Interests

Helen’s current research explores the expectations that are constructed and reported by the media regarded high-performance athletes. Within her PhD research so far Helen has used qualitative research methods to explore how performance expectations conveyed within print and digital media manifest, and the consequences that these expectations have on high performance athletes and their support network. She also has a passion for optimising the student learning environment within the field of Sport and Exercise Psychology, and has recently engaged in research to examine the application of Problem Based Learning within this discipline.
