About Ingrid Richter

Ingrid is a senior lecturer on the Childhood Studies degree. She began her professional life as a teacher in a secure unit for young offenders. Further academic study led to a career in higher education teaching sociology and social policy.

Ingrid's academic and research interests are informed by sociology and social policy, shaped by critical feminist analysis. Her research interests include: the impact of state policy on children and young people; state and institutional responses to vulnerable children and young people; how children and young people experience the state and state institutions. These broad areas are reflected in her teaching and scholarly activities.

Research Interests

Ingrid's most recent research investigated the experiences of a small group of women students as they journeyed into and through higher education to become workers in the Children's Workforce. The study explored the influences of gender, 'race' and class on the women's experiences of higher education and the development of professional identities. It also explored whether policy attempting to professionalise work involving children opened up potential career opportunities or limited the choices available to women.

The study revealed complex and individualised experiences, but with many commonalities, shaped by gender, 'race', and class. It showed how the women engaged with and managed issues of social justice as students and also as practitioners. Finally the historical association of work in this sector with women reinforces its continued vulnerability to socio-economic and political agendas operating currently.
