About Jennifer Granville

Jennifer has worked as an actor in repertory and West End theatre, film and TV. Her screenplays have won the La Femme, 21st Century and Latino screenwriting competitions.

Her producing credits include The Secret Songs of Butterfish, which aired on international television and won a Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival and a Special Jury Award at the New York Expo; On the Roof, a Fujifilm award-winning short; The Real Fawlty Towers for Anglia Television directed by Lindy Heymann; the experimental Winesburg, Ohio, adapted from the Sherwood Anderson book of the same name and Lost in Winesburg, a feature-length documentary which charted the making of the film. Jennifer’s experimental screenplay, MSI: The Anatomy of Integers and Permutations, is currently being adapted into a graphic novel by Princeton University Press. The Casting Handbook, published by Routledge in 2013 and co-written with Suzy Catliff, is a comprehensive and informative compilation of facts and professional guidelines on the infrastructure and process of casting for all live and recorded media.

Prior to joining Leeds Beckett University, Jennifer taught screenwriting and producing at the Ohio University School of Film in the USA.

Research Interests

Jennifer’s main interest lies in adaptation ranging from adapting math theorems into poems and screenplays to biography and political manifesto into short film. She started her career as an actor and writer in repertory and West End theatre, film and TV. Her screenplays have won the La Femme, 21st Century and Latino screenwriting competitions whilst her poetry has been published in Strange Attractors: Poems of Love and Mathematics and The Journal of the American Mathematical Society.

Her producing credits include The Secret Songs of Butterfish, which aired on international television and won a Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival and a Special Jury Award at the New York Expo; On the Roof, a Fujifilm award-winning short; The Real Fawlty Towers for Anglia Television directed by Lindy Heymann; the experimental Winesburg, Ohio, adapted from the Sherwood Anderson book of the same name and Lost in Winesburg, a feature-length documentary which charted the making of the film. She directed Coke Not Coal which was developed as part of the 2016/17 Mining the Memories research project.

Jennifer is currently working on adapting her experimental screenplay, MSI: The Anatomy of Integers and Permutations, into a graphic novel to be published by Princeton University Press, The Casting Handbook, published by Routledge in 2013 and co-written with Suzy Catliff, is a comprehensive and informative compilation of facts and professional guidelines on the infrastructure and process of casting for all live and recorded media. Jennifer is the research lead and manager of the CINAGE project for the UK – an examination of the portrayal of ageing in European Cinema and examination of how film production can aid active ageing.

Jennifer was Director of the Northern Film School from 2005 – 2012 and, prior to joining Leeds Beckett University, taught screenwriting and producing at the Ohio University School of Film in the USA.
