About Jennifer Landells
Jenny is a Senior Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy within the School of Social Psychological and Communication Sciences. Before joining our University in 1999, she practised as a Speech and Language Therapist in North Wales and Halifax, West Yorkshire.
As a practitioner, Jenny specialised in working with children with Specific Language Impairment, which involved close collaboration with teachers and education staff in mainstream schools.
Jenny teaches in the area of paediatric disorders of communication. She maintained a link with the Speech and Language Service in Calderdale NHS Trust, working with special needs children in mainstream schools and as a Placement Educator for students on placement until 2006.
As part of developing innovative SLT placements, Jenny has formed a number of partnerships. A Partnership with Harrogate SLT Group in 2009, developed a Conversation Partners Scheme. All Level 4 students now undertake a Conversation Partners placement, visiting adults with communication difficulties resulting from aphasia following stroke. Aphasia can result in social isolation. The scheme benefits the individuals with aphasia, who have opportunities to communicate in their own homes. The students benefit from learning the skills of supported conversation.
A recent partnership with the West Yorkshire Probation Trust study took the form of a placement for two final year students. The placement provided a valuable opportunity for students to be involved in the development of SLT services in the field of offending and future placements are planned.

Jenny is currently collaborating with the West Yorkshire Probation Trust to look at the Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCNs) of Service users attending probation services. A successful feasibility study conducted in 2012 established that service users have a range of SLCNs. The collaboration will continue with the aim developing awareness, assessment and support for the service users within the trust.
Jenny is interested in promoting the voice of the service user, with the aim of raising awareness of the needs of individuals with both SLCNs and swallowing difficulties. In 2009, Jenny was involved as a consultant in the production of a DVD about the experiences of people with swallowing difficulties. She is currently acting as consultant SLT in the production of a training DVD about children with primary communication difficulties.
