About Philip Garrison
A former practising engineer, Philip Garrison has taught structural engineering for many years. He has worked for both consultants and contractors in structural and highway engineering, in the UK and overseas.
Phil teaches structural engineering at all levels of bachelors and masters degrees in civil engineering. His specialism is structural design. He is actively involved with the Institution of Structural Engineers, on which he is a committee member.
He has been an external examiner and an external panel member on course validation events for other universities.
He is a published author and supervises student dissertations.

Phil is the author of the textbook "Basic Structures", now on its 3rd edition, which sells around the world. A Portuguese-language edition has just been released by a Brazilian publisher. He has also contributed a chapter to another book, and has contributed to the Times Higher Education Supplement and the Timber Trades Yearbook.
Phil supervises student dissertations at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, particularly on masonry arches and engineering timber.
