There are faith spaces for student, staff and visitor use at various locations across both campuses.
Our University welcomes people from all faiths and none. Recognising both its background as a secular institution and that Religion or Belief are protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010, it makes provision for faith spaces at both its main campuses for the use of students, staff and visitors who are on campus attending other events.
The faith spaces and washing facilities at City Campus are on the corridor area on the first floor of Woodhouse building and, following recent closure for maintenance, are now open for use again. Access to the rooms is by swipe card only; all student and staff cards will give access to the area. The rooms can be accessed 08:00 – 19:00, Monday to Friday
The faith spaces at Headingley Campus are in the Grange at the south end of the campus. The rooms (male and female) and toilets / washing facilities were refurbished Summer 2014. As at City Campus, access to the rooms is by swipe card only via the entrance to the left of the main entrance; all student and staff cards will give access to the area. The rooms can be accessed 08:00 – 19:00, Monday to Friday.
Out of Hours Faith Spaces
We now have arrangements in place in the Libraries to provide rooms which can be used as faith spaces during out of hours times, such as evenings and weekends, when the campus facilities are closed. The details for the out of hours faith spaces are as follows:
City Campus - Leslie Silver 109. This room is available as a faith space during the hours 20:00-07:00 Monday to Friday and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday.
Headingley Campus - James Graham 101. This room is available as a faith space during the hours 19:00-08:00 Monday to Friday and 24 hours a day Saturday and Sunday. Please be aware this is not a small, private room but a room shared with silent study use as the existing space G41a is currently being refurbished.
These rooms do not have access to washing facilities but have been identified as the most suitable alternative faith spaces during out of hours times.
Other faith spaces
The Claire Chapel (upstairs) in the Emmanuel Centre, Woodhouse Lane, is open for quiet reflection and Christian prayer, Monday to Friday. A list of worship services can be found on the chaplaincy website.
Faith and Belief Forum
The Faith and Belief Forum is a network that is open to both staff and students to join, whether they have faith or no religious beliefs at all. The forum provides a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space for people to discuss issues relating to Religion, Faith, Belief and no Belief.
