On this page you’ll find information on who to contact and where to find guidance on what requirements you need to meet to progress from one level of your course to the next, to be awarded a qualification and the approach to calculating your classification.

Section 4 of the Academic Regulations contains information on the criteria for progression, award eligibility and classification.

You are strongly advised to check your course handbook for any course-specific requirements. For example, your course may have a requirement to pass all modules to meet the accreditation criteria for a professional body.

If you are on an honours degree your classification will be from the following:

  • First Class
  • Upper Second Class (2:1)
  • Lower Second Class (2:2)
  • Third Class

The method for calculating your honours classification is summarised in the ‘Progression and Award Factsheet for Students’ on the Academic Regulations web page, available under Section 4: Progression and Award.

In addition, all honours degree students have a borderline classification rule applied to their final average mark, to determine whether they are eligible to be upgraded to the next classification boundary. More information on this rule is available on the ‘Honours Degree Classification Upgrade Rule Factsheet’, also located on the Academic Regulations web page.

If you are on a non-honours course (for example, a Masters) your classification will be from the following: Distinction, Merit or Pass. The method for calculating your classification is summarised in the ‘Progression and Award Factsheet for Students’ on the Academic Regulations web page, available under Section 4: Progression and Award.
