Quality Assurance Agency Higher Education Review
The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has confirmed the quality and standards of provision at Leeds Beckett University.
A key part of the QAA's role is to review and report on how providers of higher education, such as universities and colleges, maintain their academic standards and quality. The overall aim of Higher Education Review is to inform students and the wider public whether a provider meets the expectations of the higher education sector.
Students are at the heart of Higher Education Review; they are full members of QAA's peer review teams, and there are also opportunities for students to take part in the review by contributing a student submission, meeting the review team, and working with their providers in response to review outcomes.
The team of QAA reviewers visited our University in April 2014 and judged that our academic standards, the quality and enhancement of student learning opportunities, and the quality of information about these learning opportunities all meet UK expectations. This successful review means that our University can display the QAA Quality Mark, indicating to UK and international students that the University meets national requirements for standards and quality. The review identified the following areas of good practice:
- the University's comprehensive and systematic engagement with collaborative partners through formal and informal mechanisms; and
- the way employability is embedded in the design, approval and delivery of courses.
The review also affirmed the following actions that our University is already taking to improve the educational provision offered to its students:
- the actions being taken to engage students as transformational agents of change and the commitment to strengthen this further; and
- the actions being taken to enhance the research environment
The review made one recommendation, that we should reflect upon the duration and scope of approval events with collaborative partner organisations to ensure it can be demonstrated that due consideration has been given to all areas of delivery.
Our action plan, addressing the features of good practice, the affirmations and the recommendations, was been developed in partnership with our Students' Union. The Action Plan is now complete and was signed off at the University's Academic Board held on 1st July 2015.
Our strong partnership working with our students, their representatives and our Students' Union will support and inform continuous improvement and further enhancement of our provision on an on-going basis each year.
