AWARD WINNING LOW CARBON & SUSTAINABILITY DISSERTATIONS

CIOB International Innovation and Research Awards 2012
Michael Corran from Leeds Beckett University received the CIOB Undergraduate Dissertation Premier Award for his dissertation ‘Can passivhaus standards be met in the UK using traditional cavity wall construction?’ The judges commented ‘A great piece of work that was well presented and well organised. It built an argument that was supported throughout; focusing effectively on whether passivhaus standards can be met in the UK using traditional cavity wall construction.’

CIOB International Innovation and Research Awards 2011
A Highly Commended Award went to David Farmer from Leeds Beckett University for his dissertation
'Homes Fit for Carbon Zeros: Refurbishing interwar council housing.'
Summary

Academic Supervision
A continuous thread through all of the dissertations, which have received CIOB awards, is that of high quality supervision. All of the award winning students benefitted greatly from the guidance and feedback of Leeds Beckett University’s Senior Lecturer John Bradley.

Industry support
Many of the dissertation winners from this year and previous years have benefitted from our links with leading industrial partners. We would specifically like to thank the Green Building Store for assistance with research on the Denby Dale Passive House, BAM for their assistance over the years with site visits and a number of research projects and Downing for their investment in research. We are indebted to industry and the professional bodies that support us. I would like to thank and congratulate all of those involved.
Professor Chris Gorse, Director of Leeds Sustainability Institute.
