Research Awards Supervision
The Graduate School is here to assist, encourage and advise you in supporting your research students throughout their studies. In doing so we offer a comprehensive set of workshops for academic staff who wish to become supervisors as well as those who currently supervise research students.
This is a full day in person workshop for academic colleagues seeking university approval as a Research Student supervisor.
You are also required to complete and submit your CV before the training for approval by the University Research Degrees Sub-Committee which will qualify you to supervise research students.
Following attendance at this day workshop and approval of staff CVs, participants will be eligible to supervise research award students.
This approval is made with an expectation that staff will engage with further appropriate staff development on supervision offered throughout the academic year and focused on e.g. Preparing students for CoR, Preparing for Annual Progression and Vivas and the final year.
Further material is also accessible via the on-line Epigeum units which all delegates will be given access to after the event.
The full one day workshop will usually be offered two to three times during the academic year depending on interest.

This workshop provides an outline of the role and remit of an Independent Chair of a Viva-Voce examination for a research award. Please contact researcherdevelopment@leedsbeckett.ac.uk for the information on the latest Independent Chair training.
Before attending the training you are required to familiarise yourself with the Guidance on the Appointment and Role of the Independent Chair and submit your request for approval to become an Independent Chair via this form.
This workshop covers all aspects of supervision relating to both PhDs and professional doctorates. Specifically, it will focus on the code of practice for research awards, student milestones and the research degree sub-committee.
This workshop is suitable for staff who are involved with the supervision of Research Students. It is particularly aimed at staff that are experienced at research supervision and is suitable for staff who want to refresh and update their knowledge of the research degree framework.

Join us for an online demonstration of SAM (Student Admin Manager), the tool used to administer the milestones associated with the PGR student journey. The session will include supervision meetings, confirmation of registration, annual progression, examinations, change requests, etc.
The session will be delivered online via MS Teams.

*It is a requirement of the supervisory role that you keep up to date with regulations, processes and changes concerning research award programmes through workshop attendance on a bi-annual basis and other professional development opportunities.
SAM is Leeds Beckett University's record keeping system which is used by all Research students, their Supervisory teams and the Graduate School, to manage all stages of the research student journey.

Developing Your Students
Our university offers a range of resources to help you support and develop your postgraduate research students, from enrolment through to graduation.
MyBeckett is the university's portal to online learning. Here, students are able to access their email accounts, personal storage area and the RTP module where they will find workshop materials and announcements (such as calls for papers, conferences and external training opportunities).
Our university subscribes to Vitae, an online provider of professional development and careers information, advice and resources for higher education institutions and researchers. This resource is available to all our staff and students. To access the resources, you should register with Vitae using your university email address.
Students and staff can access Vitae's Researcher Development Framework - a tool to plan, promote and support the personal, professional and career development of researchers in the UK.
The Research Training Programme (RTP) features a range of workshops and seminars to help postgraduate research students to become competent researchers in their chosen disciplines. It also helps them to develop transferable skills to broaden their career options.
The RTP is compulsory for full-time and part-time students studying for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a professional doctorate, whether studying on or off campus. For those studying for a Masters by Research (MRes) degree, the RTP is not compulsory. However, MRes students are able to access all the resources to support their studies.
SAM is where students can view, and book onto, the RTP workshops.
The Leeds Beckett University Postgraduate Research Society is run by students for students - giving postgraduate research students a space to connect and share their experiences. The society works closely with The Graduate School as a means of gaining valuable feedback.
Students are encouraged to get involved in the society through social gatherings, events, and presenting their research at an annual symposium.
