Gareth Payne - BA (Hons) Social Work

I have been working in social care as a support worker for adults and children with learning disabilities for the last five years. Working in this field has made me want to help less fortunate groups, and generally contribute to society which is why I chose to study social work.

Studying Social Work

“I have been working in social care as a support worker for adults and children with learning disabilities for the last five years. Working in this field has made me want to help less fortunate groups, and generally contribute to society which is why I chose to study social work.

“I’ve returned to university as a mature student. As such I have to self-finance and that means I have needed to work in order to support myself. This is a huge pressure, in terms of juggling work commitments and study. Receiving the scholarship has helped me a great deal in alleviating this pressure and allows me to focus more on my studies.

“I’m quite ambitious in terms of how good I want the quality of my academic work to be. I was pleased with the standard of my work in first year but I want to further improve how I write and my grades. Professor Bligh’s experience and expertise will be very useful in achieving this.

“After I graduate, I hope to progress well in my career as a social worker. However, I enjoy academia and would like to continue to study to a postgraduate level, and perhaps even a PhD. I expect that the next two years of my degree will influence this, and how I can encompass this within my career in social work.”

Receiving the scholarship has helped me a great deal in alleviating this pressure and allows me to focus more on my studies.
