Mariam Shahid, LLB (Hons) Law

I chose to study law as criminal law as always been an interest of mine. I was inspired by watching the news and seeing miscarriages of justice and watching TV shows, although not always 100% accurate, motivated me to pursue a career in law and criminal defence.

What inspired you to study law?

Being the first person in my family to go to university has been a big motivation for me. I have always wanted to succeed in school so I could carry on my studies. I have always been interested in criminal law. Seeing the miscarriages of justice in the news and on the TV motivated me to pursue a career in law and criminal defence.

I got some experience working in a local call centre specialising in mortgage advice. This gave me insight into legal issues and how I can apply this to what I am learning now.

Why did you apply to the Halifax Law Society Scholarship?

It was really heartening to see that the Halifax Law Society were taking the time and effort to support others. It showed me that there were people out there who were willing to offer opportunities to people from backgrounds like mine.

How will the scholarship help you?

The scholarship has been a huge help to me. As a commuting student I have used it to help cover my travel costs from Halifax to Leeds, taking the stress of getting to university away. The scholarship will also help me make the most of my studies with additional resources and law textbooks.
