Studying BSc (Hons) Computer Forensics & Security

Mathew’s decision to attend university was a huge one for him, he currently has no permanent address other than his university halls. He loves computer science and one day aims to work in IT security. His passion for computing was first sparked when he accidentally downloaded a virus onto his laptop which he got rid of himself. In addition to his studies Mathew currently works 20 hours a week at Trade Me In, an electronics company. He began working there on a voluntary basis wanting to keep up to date with the industry.

Mathew has overcome many personal challenges prior to attending university. During his AS levels he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis causing him to take a month off college and during his final year of his studies he suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.

Without the Bright Futures Scholarship I could’ve been homeless in July – I would’ve had to put all of my possessions into storage, and couch-surf until September. Now, thanks to the kindness of Leeds Beckett alumni, I don’t have to worry about that, it’s a huge weight lifted. The Scholarship is a huge motivator; it means so much for graduates to put their faith in me.

Almost a third of first year students have either already dropped out of university or are considering leaving. Recent research tells us that students from disadvantaged backgrounds are much more likely to do so, with money worries being a key driver for this. Mathew is just one of many talented students who need additional financial support to achieve their potential, in 2016 we received over 100 applications for a Bright Futures Scholarship. The rising cost of living and the introduction of tuition fees mean a student can feel they have no other choice but to leave university in their first year. Bright Futures Scholarships give students who are struggling financially a much needed boost at a time when they need it most.
