Zain Khan, LLB (Hons) Law
I went out of my way to seek a work placement at a local law firm - I couldn’t secure one through college, so I had to go out and knock on doors to secure that opportunity. I have worked in conveyancing and criminal law, and the placement experience made me certain that it was the right decision to come and study Law at Leeds Beckett.
Why did you choose to study law?
I was studying for a BTEC in IT before I started my Law degree. However, I did not see myself having the same prospects in IT as I could with a legal degree. I went out and found a placement in a local law firm, as I couldn’t secure one through my college.
The sense of achievement in finding my own placement drove me on and I gained experience in conveyancing and criminal law. The placement experience made me certain that it was the right decision to study law.
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
I don’t come from a background where my parents are able to support me financially. My dad is a part-time driving instructor, and my mum works part-time as a cleaner and kitchen worker at a school. Coming to university was a difficult decision.
I have chosen to stay at home and live with my family while studying to avoid the accommodation and living costs, and so I commute into Leeds from Halifax each day for university.
