Susan Everett (Graphic Design, 1987 and Scriptwriting, 1991)

Susan Everett (Graphic Design, 1987 and Scriptwriting, 1991)

Susan studied Graphic Design and worked as an illustrator before studying Scriptwriting, which inspired her passion for film. She has won numerous prizes for her short stories and short films. Her first novel Crazy Horse was a finalist in the 2010 People's Book Prize and her feature film script Lost Girl is due to shoot in 2013, with the photographer Rankin directing.

Susan studied Graphic Design and later went on to do Scriptwriting. She said: “On the Graphic Design course I specialised in illustration, and also took a film history class for those 3 years, which inspired my passion for film. When I made the decision to focus on my writing and do a Scriptwriting MA, the Northern School of Film & TV in Leeds was the first course in the country doing that. It changed everything – both in terms of my career, but also in giving me the confidence to call myself a writer, and become one.”

She worked as an illustrator before moving her focus onto writing. In 1993 she won the Carl Foreman Screenwriting Award, in association with BAFTA, and spent 18 months at California State University, Long Beach, writing scripts and directing her first short film. While in L.A. she gained experience in the script department at Jersey Films, who are responsible for Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty. Since then she has worked as a script editor, script consultant and screenwriting tutor.

Susan has won numerous prizes for her short stories, including the This Morning TV/SHE Magazine short story competition, and Northern Stories, and her work has appeared in numerous anthologies and magazines. Her first novel Crazy Horse was a finalist in the 2010 People's Book Prize. She has directed four short films, the most recent being Mother, Mine, which screened at over 80 film festivals and won 16 international awards. Her feature film script Lost Girl is due to shoot in 2013, with the photographer Rankin directing.
