Carnegie Sport and Physical Education Alumni Association Steering Group
What is the Steering Group?
The group is being formed to improve the alumni engagement activities of the Carnegie School of Sport and Leeds Beckett University, by building relationships with our alumni, advising on our current activities, supporting current students and promoting the University’s reputation amongst their own network of friends, colleagues and business associates.
Dr Bob Price OBE studied Physical Education at Carnegie College of Physical Education. Since then he has reached extraordinary levels of success as an international pioneer for the progression of disabled athletes. After graduating, he started out as a PE teacher for children with severe physical disabilities, before moving to a more senior role promoting international education within sport. He was soon appointed Chief Executive of the British Sports Association for the Disabled, where he gained notoriety for his passion for progressing Paralympic athletes, and was made head of delegation to the Great Britain team in five consecutive Summer Paralympic Games. In his subsequent roles as Chairman of the Great Britain National Paralympic Committee, President of the European Paralympic Committee and more recently, President of Inas (the International Federation for sport for athletes with an intellectual disability), he has achieved unprecedented levels of success in disability sport and this year was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Leeds Beckett University in recognition of his achievements. Dr Bob says "Carnegie provided me with skills, values and a behavioural frame of reference which have served me well throughout a long and varied career. It is an honour and a privilege to be able to ‘give something back’ and I encourage all other Carnegie alumni to join me in supporting this new and exciting development."
Carnegie alumnus Mike Gray has worked across education, sport, and sport and exercise science for over 30 years, firstly in Physical Education, followed by teacher training in higher education, curriculum development and course leadership. Working in partnership development and relationship management he developed networks across business, education and sport that are now supporting current and former students. He has a passion for teaching science and its applications in education, health and sport, and enjoys mentoring and people development. He is Head of Subject for Sport and Exercise Physiology in the Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University. On being asked to Co-chair the Steering Group Mike says “I am proud of my Carnegie heritage and its contribution to our university. As Co-chair it will be a privilege to work with Bob Price to develop our alumni association for the benefit of our students and alumni. The association has the potential to significantly enhance the work of Leeds Beckett University and our contribution to Physical Education and Sport.”
