Meningitis What you need to know

In the last few years there’s been a rapid increase in Meningitis cases among university students. There’s a new vaccine available (MenACWY) by the uptake has been slow – just 33% of school leavers in England took the vaccine in 2016.

Why do I need to have the vaccine?

Students are a particularly high risk group for meningitis. If it’s diagnosed early, the vast majority of cases will make a full recovery. However, it can be fatal if left untreated, so it’s important to take precautions. You can stay safe and help those around you by getting your vaccine and learning about how to spot meningitis symptoms in others.

Am I eligible for the vaccine?

If you're a student who hasn't been protected against meningitis and you're aged 25 or under, you can still get vaccinated. Contact your GP and ask for the Men ACWY vaccine.

I haven't had my vaccination but I've already moved in - is it too late?

No, but you need to get booked in as soon as possible. Get registered with a local practice today and ask them to arrange a Men ACWY vaccination for you.
