Autorenewals and you!

The Library introduced the new automatic renewal system in October, meaning that we’ll keep renewing your Library items for up to 6 months, unless someone else needs the item or you finish your course.

Books are issued and renewed week by week, but for Offsite students the books are protected from being requested by anyone else for the first three weeks. So, if you want to borrow something that’s already on loan, you need to request it by putting a hold on it. Distance learners registered with Offsite should place items on hold via Books by Mail.

What happens when you place a hold on a Library item?

If the item is already on loan an email is sent to the University email of the person who has that book, asking them to return the item as it has been requested by another user. They then have a specified number of days to return the item. It’s therefore really important to check your student email if you have books on loan, just to make sure that no-one else has requested them.

Once the item has been returned, the Holds team will process the item. For Offsite users of the Library, the book is then passed  to the Offsite team for posting out to you. Once your hold has been sent, you’ll receive an email to your student email to confirm that the book is on its way!
