Whether you've made it through your first semester at university or are halfway through your course, make sure you are ready to deal with any possible 'potholes' along the way.
If you are joining the University in Semester 2 here are some helpful things to get you started with using the Library.
We know University assignments can be scary so whether you are worried about finding information, referencing or leaving things to the last minute, don't worry there is lots of support available. Library staff will be out and about this Halloween to help calm your fears!
Leeds Beckett Academic Librarian Ellie Clement gives us her top 10 tips for writing the perfect assignment.
Sheila Silver Library at City Campus and Headingley Library are open 24/7, 365 days a year and MyBeckett is where you’ll find your modules, assignments, reading lists, email and timetable plus Library resources for your subject. There's a lot to take in during the first few weeks of university so we've put together a checklist to get you started.
We upgrade to a new version of MyBeckett every year to make sure it’s in the best shape possible to support you. But, we need time to complete the upgrade and to test the system and functionality so that MyBeckett is in full working order when it comes back online. The upgrade is carried out over the Summer to minimise disruption during the teaching year - this years upgrade means it should never need to be down for future maintenance!
Just graduated? Planning to stay on for a postgrad course? The Library can help keep your study skills on track.
The Library and the Students’ Union Advice Service are once again offering support and information to ensure you “Write Right” - develop good academic practice and maintain your academic integrity as you prepare for dissertations and final assignments.
The semester two Skills for Learning workshop programme is now available to book but if you can't get to a session we've identified 6 highlights from the website that can help you develop your academic skills.
November is AcWriMo – Academic Writing Month! An annual event aimed at helping you set and achieve your writing goals, with Leeds Beckett Library on hand to help.
We know writing essays can be scary so whether you are worried about leaving things to the last minute, finding information or referencing, don't worry there is lots of support available. Library staff will be out and about this Halloween to help calm your fears! And not just for essays - we can help with all your assignment queries.
Changes and updates for the new academic year!
Thank you to everyone who stopped by our Halloween stalls the other day, where our (hopefully not too scary) staff asked you what's the scariest thing about writing essays.
You might think (or hope!) that essay writing was something just for school but lots of university assignments require you to write an essay in some form; defined by Skills for Learning as "an extended piece of writing which attempts to answer a question or respond to a statement".
Libraries Week takes place 9-14 October and is a chance to showcase some of the amazing things that your Library offers.
This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week 2017, and this year’s theme is ‘Positive about Dyslexia’. The Library has a wide range of support available for students with dyslexia to help you succeed at University.
Our two University Libraries, Sheila Silver Library in the Leslie Silver Building at City Campus and Headingley Library in the James Graham Building at Headingley are open 24/7 365. They have different types of study space so you can choose to work in silence or in a group study area, or book a Student Meeting Room.
Please note this programme is now closed for semester one 2017-18. If you need help with your academic skills please see the Skills for Learning website, attend one of the workshops or contact your Academic Librarian.
Skills for Learning workshops have finished for the summer but there's still lots of help available from the team.
