Leeds Beckett hosts the International Computer Science and Engineering conference 'DESSERT 2019'

In June this year, the Computer Science team at Leeds Beckett hosted the International Conference on Dependable Systems, Services and Technologies (DESSERT) at our Headingley Campus.

This successful conference event featured around 40 regular research papers and focused this year on theme of ‘IoT, Big Data and AI for a Smart and Safe Future’

The academic programme commenced on 5th June 2019 with an opening speech from DVC for Research, Professor Andrew Slade, followed by the first keynote speech from Prof Mike Hinchey.

Professor Raj Buyya (Melbourne University, Australia), one of the world's Cloud Computing experts, acted as honorary chair for the conference which featured 3 high-profile keynote speakers:

  • Professor Mike Hinchey (University of Limerick): “Is there anything that isn’t software?”
  • Professor Juan Carlos Augusto (Middlesex University) “Aligning smart environments with user expectations”
  • Professor Geyong Min (Exeter University) “Big data analytics for intelligent cloud and network management”

Conference proceedings are published in IEEExplore and selected best papers from the conference have been invited for submission to the Special Issue on ‘Security, Usability and Sustainability of Smart Cities’ in the Journal of Reliable Intelligent Environments, guest edited by Professor Hissam Tawfik from the School of Built Environment of Engineering and Computing.
