You will be supported throughout your PhD study at the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management. We have recently announced our 2021-2022 PhD study programme which had been designed to help you develop the writing skills to successfully complete your PhD. Full details of the programme are as follows:-

Session 1: PhD student get together and introductions 
Tuesday 2nd November 12.30-2pm 
Online via Teams and in person (MC201) 
All students to share a 5-minute update or introduction about their PhD.

Session 2: A good thesis is a finished thesis – Professor Annette Pritchard, LBU 
Wednesday 1st December 1-2pm
Online via Teams 
In this session, Professor Pritchard will share ideas and insights on planning, writing, rewriting and achieving your goals.

CHRISTMAS

Session 3: Developing writing habits – Professor Emma Wood, Dr Thomas Fletcher and Dr Ian Lamond, LBU 
Wednesday 19th January 1-2pm 
Online via Teams
This will be a panel discussion where colleagues share their suggestions for writing regularly.

Session 4: “You’ve got this”: Positive reflections on publishing from your PhD – Dr Helen Wadham, Manchester Metropolitan University
Wednesday 23rd February 1-2pm
Online via Teams
In this session, Dr Wadham will discuss how to go about developing a chapter of your PhD thesis into an article for publication. 

Session 5: Writing and wellbeing – Dr Nancy Stevenson, University of Westminster  
Wednesday 23rd March 12-1pm 
Online via Teams 
In this session, Dr Stevenson will discuss her research on the importance of wellbeing to writing well and often. This session is a pre-curser to the writing retreat. 

EASTER 

Session 6: Writing for non-academic audiences – Dr Kendra Coulter, Brock University, Canada
Wednesday 4th May 2-3pm 
Online via Teams 
In this session, Dr Coulter will discuss the importance of communicating your research beyond academic audiences and share insights from her own engagement with different media partners and platforms. 

Session 7: Writing retreat with Dr Nancy Stevenson, University of Westminster 
Wednesday 8th June – ALL DAY
Headingley campus
This full day writing retreat will provide you with time and space to concentrate on your writing, including exercises to improve focus and productivity. 

For students not able to attend the writing retreat in person, a half-day online session will be arranged to share insights and practices. 

School academic conference
June, date to be confirmed – ALL DAY
Headingley campus, with option to join virtually by Teams
All students will be asked to submit an abstract and then present an aspect of their research to everyone in the School. This is a valuable opportunity to gain feedback and listen to other people’s research, including that of staff.

Professor Kate Dashper is the Director of Research Degrees in the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management. Her research applies a critical sociological lens to examine practices of work and leisure, particularly focusing on gender issues and interspecies encounters.
