Why did you decide to study at Leeds Beckett?

Being from the background of sports physiotherapy and having previously worked in the field of events management, it was time to follow my passion and choose to do a Masters in Sports Event Management.

Back in India, when I was selecting my course and city to study, I was focused on two main things: a university with good rankings in my chosen field, and a city that had a stadium so I could apply my skills and go on to practice my learnings.

The cherry on top was that 2023 was going to be the cultural year for Leeds.

Why did you want to volunteer with LEEDS 2023?

It was an instinct that LEEDS 2023 could help me get on the right track in my chosen field. Being an artist myself, I felt so connected to the upcoming year of culture and was eagerly waiting for the Awakening.

Being a part of Leeds 2023 is something that will not only help me familiarise myself with the city and its culture but also reconnect to my artist side.

How did you find the experience?

The Awakening was the very first event of 2023 and being there was an amazing feeling, I felt so at home watching Gabby Logan and Sanchez Payne hosting the evening with all the artists from across the city.

It was so exciting to be a part of such a vibrant volunteer team and to start our very first shift at Headingley Stadium. My main responsibilities were working in the south stand guiding people and providing them with the light lamps for the light show in the opening ceremony. I was so thrilled to witness the fireworks and the drone effect in the opening along with all the performances.

Overall, the whole experience was enthralling, reminding me that this is just the beginning.

What was your favourite part of the volunteering experience?

Being at the opening show and interacting with people from different parts of the city was my favourite part. But I can’t leave out the awesome volunteer merch, which will always remind me of this amazing experience.

Every day is a new learning experience, and I was so amazed by seeing the enthusiasm of all the volunteers, who were from a range of backgrounds and age groups. The inclusivity was wholesome. Learning different management skills has been my main takeaway so far and I am looking forward to many more.

Can you describe Leeds in five words or less?

L - LOVE

E - EDUCATION

E - ENTERTAINMENT

D - DIVERSITY

S - SOCIALISING

What would you say to fellow LBU students who are considering getting involved in the Year of Culture?

I would suggest to everyone who’s reading this not to wait for opportunities, go grab them and be a part of the city you’re studying in. Volunteering not only provides you a platform to explore different organisations but also helps you discover yourself.

I advise everyone to go for volunteering once in your life, anywhere around the world, because that feeling is something else and you gain invaluable skills and experience.

I am super-duper excited for the year of culture ahead and many amazing things are lined up. I have even been in touch with Sanchez Payne himself, seeking that next opportunity. I hope other students are as enthusiastic about what's coming up as I am!
