BSc Counselling and Mental Health students making the case for change through podcasts and videos

Our third year BSc (Hons) Counselling and Mental Health students were set the task of highlighting a current issue in mental health and making the case for change in mental health practice. Here we'd like to celebrate a selection of podcasts and a video presentation produced by this cohort.

The students were given the freedom to choose which format they delivered their case through, and many students took the opportunity to do some really creative work to add to their portfolio. Students tackled a variety of issues in mental health and found interesting and diverse ways to present their arguments, please take a look and feel free to share to your own social media channels:

  • Jill Barbato raises awareness of conversion therapy for gay people and makes the case for ending these practices in the UK. Jill explained that this was a contemporary issue that she is passionate about.
  • Lawrence Johnston-Bolton tackles trauma therapies for returning military service people.
  • Sammi Fletcher urges us to consider the impact of the 'medical model' on mental health treatment in making her case for change. Sammi says: 'This project was inspired by 2 books, Drop the Disorder by Jo Watson and Lost Connections by Johann Hari, I know full well even after this project I plan on spending my summer re-reading the latter.'
  • Amy Hoyle offered a presentation on the impacts of social media on mental health and considers strategies to tackle potential harms
