Student Story: Tracy Lambert, MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Why did you choose to study your course at Leeds Beckett University?
Child and Adolescent Mental Health is a subject I am passionate about and wanted to study further. Leeds Beckett was the best choice for me as it is local and I was impressed by the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health course they offered.

What have you enjoyed most about your course?
The thing I have most enjoyed is emerging as an independent researcher and the vast reading I undertook, which in some ways challenged my views and beliefs. It was a real emotional journey.

How have your lecturers inspired you?
I feel I have had the opportunity to be taught by very committed lecturers who were willing to challenge your perspective in a strong way, whilst respecting your own interpretations and stance within the research undertaken. My Dissertation Supervisor is a straight-talking Yorkshireman who inspired me with his passion for his profession and for learning. I always felt challenged by him and that I could always improve, something my grandparents instilled into me as a child.

Are there specific projects or work you have done that you’re particularly proud of?
I am particularly proud of my dissertation. It was a very cathartic journey, as it incorporated my lived experiences as a Foster Carer, as well as researching the complex area of child protection law and the child and adolescent mental health of ‘Looked After Children’.

What are your plans after you graduate?
I have been lucky enough to secure a job as a Safeguarding and Wellbeing Officer for Hull 14-16 College. In my role I am routinely dealing with child protection matters; mental health and wellbeing of young people, and collaborating closely with multiple agencies in the best interests of children, young people and their families.

What advice would you give to people thinking of studying your course?
The course is very rewarding but also it is exceptionally hard work, so if you’re doing full time study make sure you are available and well prepared for every lecture to get the most out of the experience and use your tutors time and experience wisely.
