My name is Gavin Connor, I am a second year MSc (Pre-reg) Physiotherapy student following on from a BSc (Hons) Sports and Exercise Therapy degree. I have been at Leeds Beckett for almost six years now, so basically part of the furniture … however, I’m originally from Consett, County Durham! My main interests are football and boxing, and luckily, I had the pleasure of taking part in both sports whilst living here in Leeds!

Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to Physiotherapy

Naturally, I have a strong passion for human anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation and performance, and was drawn to Leeds Beckett for a range of different things, including the facilities, opportunities, and reputation … but can’t forget the nightlife! Since moving to Leeds I’ve had some fantastic opportunities to work in elite level sport, participate in research studies and work with some of the big experts within their own field. In addition to that, throughout my BSc, I made some fantastic connections and had a lot of support from lecturers and work colleagues that helped me pursue a Masters degree in physiotherapy. I love to problem solve and meet new people, which physiotherapy requires both! There is such a broad spectrum of specialities you can move into with physiotherapy, depending on your area of interest, which is why I was drawn towards this profession.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

I personally think that choosing a university should come down to many different factors. Most importantly, the opportunities, support and facilities that the university is going to provide; however, also looking at the nightlife and the social aspects that a city is going to offer. My main attraction to Leeds Beckett was the Carnegie School of Sport. I love playing sports, and the number of clubs you can join and the people you meet allows you to settle in quickly. I decided to stay on at Leeds Beckett to continue my education as a result of the support and encouragement I received from some of the lecturers in my undergrad. It makes you feel good when people are there to support you and help you achieve what you want to achieve.

What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?

I have had so many unbelievable experiences that I’d never have thought I’d do whilst as a student. However, the main thing is I have met so many people through my BSc, MSc and joining sports clubs that I will be friends with for life. Therefore, my favourite thing about my time at Leeds Beckett is being able to meet people, make friends and go through a journey with them until you all meet your end goal.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?

Do it. It’s difficult, it’s challenging, but also very rewarding. You meet many different people from many different backgrounds and are supported all the way through! Keep an open mind on what you would want to do when finishing your degree, you’ll learn so many interesting things about the human body that your mind can change from week to week!

I have loved every minute of it.
