About Dave Bunting MBE

Dave’s presentation is an inspirational account of his experiences planning and leading the expedition in which he led a team of elite climbers to become the first British team to climb the formidable and rarely attempted West Ridge of Mount Everest. It is a riveting and awe-inspiring account of the leadership skills and determination necessary to select the right team, motivate and engage them and build a shared vision that will enable them to reach their goal.

Dave paints an extraordinary picture of successful teamwork, tough decision-making, personal challenge and enduring friendship in the most extreme environments. With stunning images from the rare vantage point of the West Ridge of Mount Everest, it is a presentation that will inspire, move, entertain and leave a lasting impression.

Dave Bunting is a great mountaineer, exceptional leader and truly inspirational speaker, who is equally at home talking Leadership Development or Outdoor and Adventure.

About John Allan PhD

As an academic and adventure education practitioner, John Allan PhD leads undergraduate, post-graduate programmes and supervises doctoral students in Outdoor Education and Psychology. His area of research centres on educational and systems-based positive psychology and resilience building. Resilience is the inherent and learned adaptive capabilities we are able to utilise in difficult circumstances. The emergence of the field of positive psychology and resilience has led to an increasing focus on preventative and proactive approaches to well-being and strength-based functioning in contrast to traditional deficit-focused models that explicitly target symptoms of ill-health, problematic behaviours and learning challenges.

John’s evidence-based practices have underpinned programmes specifically designed to build the resilience of individuals and group across different sectors of health, education, public services and business. These system-based programmes have enabled people to understand and recognise their competencies and utilise strategies to raise aspirations, deal with stress in periods of transition and sustain capabilities across contexts. On-going research outputs include international and national journal publications, book chapters, key note addresses, conference symposiums and presentations.

John has a huge passion for the outdoors. He provided sports science support (psychological strength-based functioning) for the Everest West Ridge 2006 Expedition, undertaking two trips to the Himalayas and was Deputy Leader on a University staff/student expedition to the Everest region in 2009. He is an active member of the Institute for Outdoor Learning, and British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

Dr John Allan
