Story Makers Press

The Story Makers Press is a university-based children’s press focused on encouraging children’s voices and creativity. Our aim is to publish underrepresented narratives and issues, making sure that every child can see themselves in the books they read. Our goal is to help children become engaged and compassionate readers who read for pleasure and are equipped to interact imaginatively with the world around them.

How can our books be used in schools?

Our books, and accompanying 'Explorers Guide', support schools in providing rich opportunities for children to critically reflect on the behaviour, actions and thoughts of others and themselves, by providing a structured approach to explore difficult issues through drama in a safe way. The guide provides a framework of capabilities, as well as links to the wider curriculum and the holistic development of children. These are mapped against the 3 themes below.

Through the Explorers Guide children are given meaningful opportunities to:

1. Develop an understanding of emotional literacy and positive wellbeing
2. Develop imaginative and creative thinking skills
3. Develop a shared sense of community and active citizenship.

Through the Explorers Guide drama and creative writing pedagogies help teachers to:

1. Develop an integrated curriculum which is mapped out
2. Through specialist and clearly explained drama techniques, address the Ofsted framework authentically.
» Intent is mapped in our section called Invitation which builds curiosity and behaviour for learning
» Implementation is mapped in our detailed pedagogical sections called Exploration and Discovery
»Impact is mapped against the 3 focus themes.

What do professionals and children say about our work?

"I absolutely loved it! I am a keen gamer myself so it was very much up my street and I know the boys in my class would love it and the girls too I imagine. The teacher guide was also really useful, and it was very easy to use and follow with enough scope for the teacher to add bits and pieces and incorporate their own activities."
Primary school teacher

"This guide is designed with teachers, support workers, and professionals in mind, to help support a positive discussion about how mental health is actually more closely linked to happiness, exploration, critical thinking, and adventure."
Johnny Latham, CBT therapist and CAMHS lead

"It’s really good and does the trick!"
Hywel Roberts

"I get to be a part of something that not many people get to do’
‘I have learnt that you can do anything.’
‘It makes you want to read on.’
‘My writing has definitely improved because drama gives me lots of ideas.’
‘We get to speak our own opinion and our opinion isn’t wrong.’
