Sports Business

Sport is now big business changing lives shaping communities and impacting on economies all over the world.

We will help you gain an understanding of the industry and the business principles that underpin it, blending your passion for sport with business and marketing acumen and ultimately helping you turn your passion into a rewarding career.

Our courses will prepare you for a variety of careers in the sports industry, including, management of professional sport teams and health and fitness clubs, sports marketing and leadership positions in national and international governing bodies and charities. We will also work with you to enhance your skills to allow you to develop your own business ideas within the Sport industry.

To give you a full breadth of expertise within the sector, your learning will focus on key concepts such as; sport sponsorship, the sport consumer, strategy in sport, the events industry and management principles in HR, governance, finance and economics. Our curricula have been developed with the input of industry experts. Authentic ‘real-world’ assessments are undertaken with key University partners including; Leeds Rugby, Bradford Bulls, Yorkshire County Cricket and Kirklees Active Leisure. Guest lectures will bring you into contact with professionals at the vanguard of sport business, inspiring your learning, enhancing your networks and boosting your career prospects. There is also the opportunity to gain industry experience through our Professional Practice module at undergraduate level.

In addition, we offer opportunities to volunteer at major global sporting events - previous events include the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics and the Paralympics. This year will also see the launch of our sandwich-year which can provide module credits for working in the Sport Industry on a 12-month internship or connected experience. You will develop real-world skills in leadership, management, analytics and entrepreneurship while being able to specialise in specific focus areas of your choice such as sport branding and digital media.

We will help you to blend your passion for sport with business and marketing awareness. Your learning will focus on key concepts such as Sport Sponsorship, the Sport Consumer, Strategy in Sport, the Events Industry and Management principles in HR, Governance, Finance and Economics.

The course will prepare you for a variety of rewarding careers in the sports industry, including; sport marketing and PR, management opportunities in professional sports clubs, health and fitness clubs, National and International Governing Bodies, charities and foundations, all acting to enhance your skills, allowing you to develop your own business ideas.

Our undergraduate degree in Sport Business Management is available with an integrated foundation year. If you don't have the required UCAS points to be able to secure a place on one of our sports degree programmes, the foundation year will prepare you for academic life at our University.

Nick Halafihi

Nick is the Head of Subject for the Sport Business Group.

In 2015 Nick won the University's 'Achieving Excellence' Award for 'Team Leader of the Year' and has also been short-listed for the TES 'most Innovative Teacher of the Year' award. Nick is also a University Teacher Fellow and Principal Lecturer.
