Sport Management

This subject area includes three bespoke areas which encompass the wider world of Sport Management: Sport Business, Sport Marketing and Sport Development with UG and PG programmes being offered in each specific area.

Sport is now big business, changing lives shaping communities and impacting on economies all over the world. Our courses will prepare you for a variety of careers in the sports industry, including, management of professional sport teams, health and fitness clubs, sports marketing and sports development leadership positions in national and international governing bodies and charities. We will also work with you to enhance your skills to allow you to develop your own business ideas within the Sport industry.

Our subject group is characterised by a passionate and knowledgeable staff group, with a healthy mix of internationally-renowned researchers and colleagues with extensive experience of working in sport. This means we can provide degree courses that will challenge and stimulate you intellectually whilst helping you to develop and take advantage of an array of employability opportunities which we provide.

We will help you gain an understanding of the industry and the principles that underpin it, blending your passion for sport with business, marketing and development acumen and ultimately helping you turn your passion into a rewarding career. Employability is a central theme to our courses, and you will be able to tailor your studies to match your career ambitions in key areas, led by our cutting-edge research in: the business of sport, sport in communities and inequalities in sport.

Our undergraduate degrees are available with an integrated foundation year. If you don't have the required UCAS points to be able to secure a place on one of our sports degree programmes, the foundation year will prepare you for academic life at our University. The Sport management area of the School also provides a variety of Alumni and Industry informed postgraduate provision.

Sport Business Management and Sport Marketing

To give you a full breadth of expertise within the sector, your learning will focus on key concepts such as; sport sponsorship, the sport consumer, strategy in sport, the events industry and management principles in HR, governance, finance and economics. Our curricula have been developed with the input of industry experts. Authentic ‘real-world’ assessments are undertaken with key University partners including; Banana Kick, Leeds United, Leeds Rugby, Yorkshire County Cricket, the Rugby Football League and SkyBet. Guest lectures will bring you into contact with professionals at the vanguard of sport business, inspiring your learning, enhancing your networks and boosting your career prospects. There is also the opportunity to gain industry experience through our Professional Practice module at undergraduate level and post graduate.

In addition, we offer opportunities to volunteer at major global sporting events - previous events include the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics and the Paralympics. We have also launched our sandwich-year recently which can provide module credits for working in the Sport Industry on a 12-month internship or connected experience-examples from last year include internships with the Australian Horse Racing Board in Melbourne and Heineken in Amsterdam. You will develop real-world skills in leadership, management, analytics and entrepreneurship while being able to specialise in a key focus area of your choice such as sport branding, events or digital media etc.

Sport Development

Our Sport Development courses and modules have been designed with leading industry experts. With a focus upon inequalities within sport and how they can be addressed, you will examine not only how to increase mass participation, but also how sport can be used to develop communities and tackle important social issues such as crime and health inequalities. If you choose to further your studies with a postgraduate course you will critically examine; strategic management, leadership, governance, diversity and inclusion, and sport for development.

We have excellent relationships with practitioners at all levels of sport. We work with partners including Yorkshire Sport Foundation; local authorities such as Leeds City Council; national organisations such as StreetGames and Comic Relief; governing bodies of sport such as England Handball; and various physical activity developers in the region. With our breadth of industry links, we can help you access authentic work placements, projects and events in order to enhance your employability and develop your professional networks.

We have strong links with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). Our Sport Development course has previously received CIMPSA professional endorsement, and our staff continue to work closely with them to put our students at the forefront of the sporting jobs market.

Nick Halafihi

Nick is the Head of Subject for the Marketing and PR & Journalism Subject Groups.

In 2015 Nick won the University's 'Achieving Excellence' Award for 'Team Leader of the Year' and he has also been short-listed for the TES 'most Innovative Teacher of the Year' award. Nick is also a University Teacher Fellow and Principal Lecturer.
