Carnegie School of Sport

£45m Investment in State-of-the-Art Home for Carnegie School of Sport

Construction of a new, £45m state-of-the-art building at our Headingley Campus is now well underway, and will provide an iconic home for the Carnegie School of Sport: co-locating our highly specialist teaching and research laboratories. The facility will provide a focus for the School’s undergraduate, postgraduate and research and enterprise programmes, and it will also act as a hub for elite athletes, sports and industry partners.

The building will include a wealth of outstanding facilities that include: dedicated research laboratories, hypoxic laboratory, health and well-being studio, an indoor sprint track for performance training and analysis, a roof walking track and terrace, enhanced strength and conditioning space and changing and recovery facilities. In addition, there will be networking spaces for students, staff and visitors, a café, informal teaching space and learning support that will foster inter-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing.

We have a long history in Sports Education stretching back to 1933 and the prestigious Carnegie College of Physical Training. Today, alumni of this college and its successor institutions are leaders in national and international sport. We remain one of the most popular universities in the UK for sport education – our academic staff in sport were ranked second in the UK for research quality in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. We have major strengths in the treatment and prevention of obesity, physical activity interventions for health, anti-doping policy and practice, as well as racial and gender equality in sport. The development of the Carnegie Teaching and Research building will help to ensure that our University continues to attract the best and most talented students and staff to continue this work, and form part of the economic and social contribution to Leeds and beyond.
