Sam Thirlwell

Placement: Southampton Football Club

Course: BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
Level: 5
About the Placement:

“This year I was fortunate enough to secure a placement at Southampton Football Club in the Sports Sci-ence and Medicine Department as a Sports Science and Strength and Conditioning Intern in the Academy (U9-U16). During the time I’ve spent at the club I have gained a huge amount of practical experience by working with GPS software during training and matches, conducting physical testing, leading S&C sessions on and off the football pitch, working with players in early and late stage rehabilitation to get them back to full fitness and leading match day warm ups.

Experience:

Working in this environment has helped me improve my skills as a coach by taking me out of my comfort zone, exposing me to working with multiple age groups focused on several goals in one day and having to think on my feet to resolve situations on a day to day basis. Alongside this it has improved my practical knowledge by taking what I’ve learnt at university and putting it into the real world of elite academy sports. This placement has greatly improved my prospects of employment and has given me many connections in the industry; I hope to stay in professional sports once I graduate from my BSc Sport and Exercise Science Degree at Leeds Beckett University.
