Introduction to Paddlesports

This one day course is ideal for anyone who would like to learn how to control a kayak or canoe on sheltered, flat water. Participants must be water confident as a minimum, or able to swim as capsize and rescue is part of the day.

BCU 2 star award

This two day course is for paddlers looking to develop their 1 star skills. Successful performance at this level indicates that the paddler can use fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water to control movement of both canoes and kayaks, and have an understanding of how the paddle, boat, and water interact.

BCU 3 star canoe award

BCU 3 star canoe award

Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves as an intermediate open canoe paddler rather than a beginner.

BCU 3 star white water kayak award

BCU 3 star white water kayak award

Successful performance at this level indicates that you can consider yourself as an intermediate white water kayak paddler and can now paddle on moving waters.

BCU 3 star touring kayak award

BCU 3 star touring kayak award

Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves as an intermediate paddler rather than a beginner, the candidate having demonstrated personal competence as a member of a group paddling in a variety of venues.

BCU 3 star freestyle kayak award

BCU 3 star freestyle kayak award

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills of freestyle paddle sport, from which it is possible to build more advanced skills. The paddler will work on developing techniques based around the core elements of freestyle.

BCU 4 star kayak leader award training

Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate has the skill level required to lead a group of four paddlers (not including themselves) in appropriate locations, up to moderate white water conditions [Grade 2(3)] and to judge the conditions and the standard of the group and make appropriate decisions along with the need to modify plans as required.
