Study a practical course aimed at creative and dynamic individuals with a passion for modern digital technology.
As part of this course you’ll:
- Focus on the creative application of technology
- Use industry-standard software packages in our professional studios
- Learn how to produce effective designs, websites, apps, short films and animations while working as part of a production team
- Build a substantial portfolio of work
- Have the chance to develop relationships with future employers at our showcase event, where you will display your final-year project and network with industry professionals
This course has been developed with local and national employers in the creative industries. You’ll benefit from the hands-on experience of staff who actively pursue research in this area, many of whom divide their time between academic work and commercial sector activities. You’ll have access to professional, industry-standard facilities. Our hardware and software systems are updated each year ensuring you use the same software as you will find in industry.
Throughout the course, you’ll practise presenting your work in front of a panel of tutors and industry professionals. Your final year project will be displayed at a tradeshow event where you can make contact with future employers. Previous students have found work with Disney Interactive Studios, Sky TV and many digital agencies.

Our various studios and labs are home to our games, broadcast media, digital journalism and other creative technology courses. Each space is equipped in order to meet the specialist needs of each particular course, with facilities including high-end PC or Apple iMacs featuring a full suite of industry standard software, along with other specialist equipment, such as Oculus Quest & Valve Index virtual reality technologies, XPen & Wacom Cintiq Digital Art Tablets, all of which enable students to explore and create work in video, motion graphics, 3D animation, digital art, design, VR and web production.

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Unlock your creativity in digital media by learning the technical practices and media trends in design and graphics, web and interactivity and professional practice. You will research original ideas, critically review established creative techniques and work towards a portfolio of practical work.

What you'll learn
Gain practical experience of producing multimedia content at a professional level. You'll develop an understanding of the motion graphics techniques used in moving image production.
Focus on the creation of successful websites for multiple devices.
Learn how to create products using a design thinking approach, putting the needs and preferences of end users at the centre of the process.
Undertake the production of a substantial group project for a live industry brief. You'll be able to tailor the course to meet your personal goals by selecting a production role that supports your chosen specialism.

We will promote the importance of research and development as a vital part of planning to undertake a major creative project.
Learn about the creative process, theory and structure of story-making. Then produce your own story in your own media, whether it’s video, 2D or 3D animation, music or even a printed book.
Option modules may include
Use creative thinking to explore video techniques, for both hardware and software, in the development of visual content.
This module will introduce you to the key hardware and software that makes Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) experiences possible. You'll explore the many applications of VR/AR whilst experiencing the thrill and challenge of creating content for this dynamic area of technology.
Take a more technical approach to web site construction, learning how to create a development environment and how to integrate websites with CMS.
Enhance your understanding of an area/areas of teaching and learning in higher education and use creative technologies to develop and create a package of learning materials.
Build your knowledge and understanding of the history of photographic portraits. This module will develop your knowledge of a variety of practitioners who have used portraiture in a wide variety of contexts, and will develop your confidence in taking portraits as you build a portfolio. You'll take part in a series of workshops in the studio and outside. We'll frame practical photographic work within the context of the history of the portrait, looking from its early days to studio photographer to selfie culture. You'll look at how people have been represented and by whom, including the work of the Victorian photographers who used portraiture as a means to categorise people’s mental health, to the role portraiture played in colonialism, feminism, documentary and the family album.
Learn scriptwriting skills for broadcast, acquiring the ability to provide effective written content for online media.
Create a finished, highly polished product, developing your ability to apply motion to visual content in a technically advanced and aesthetically appealing manner.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total.
Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

- Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
- Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
- Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

My course allowed me to feel confident knowing I had explored different creative routes before finally deciding what to do. I had incredible support from my tutors who encouraged me to apply for a placement, which led me to where I am today. In February I was promoted to Designer enabling me to be the design lead on projects, go out to pitches and put together proposals to win new business.
