This integrated foundation year will enable you to transition onto our BSc (Hons) Health & Society course. It will also help you prepare for academic life at university.
As part of the foundation year, you’ll:
- Study health and community studies-related modules that will give you a broad understanding of the multi-disciplinary health and social care sector
- Study additional modules that will help you develop the academic and study skills you’ll need to successfully transition from school, college or the workplace into higher education

The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks, therefore international applicants, those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency will therefore require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country before undertaking work with children and/or vulnerable others.
Mature applicants:
Our university welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. All students will be considered through the contextual admissions policy described above. If you do not meet the requirements through the contextual admissions policy, we may still be able to make you an offer if you have recent relevant work experience through our ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ policy. Please ensure that you list both your qualifications and any relevant work experience in your application so that we can consider you under both schemes where applicable..

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Teaching & Learning
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic we are currently unable to advise on the mode of teaching for September 2021, however we will keep you updated and provide more information as soon as we can. We continue to follow government guidance and your teaching and learning will reflect the restrictions in place at the time of delivery. We currently anticipate that you may experience a blended approach – this is a mix of face-to-face, on campus and online teaching and learning. What you'll learn
This module will enable you to transition from different educational backgrounds to achieve success in your chosen degree. You'll learn how to access information and support associated with your studies in Higher Education, to help you develop study skills and practices.
This module will provide an overview of health and social care and introduce you to a wide range of professions, roles and responsibilities of people working in this field. You'll gain an understanding of aspects of policy and the key influences that affect the delivery of health and social care services in the UK. You'll also be introduced to some of the challenges and contemporary issues in the sector.
This module will allow you to reflect on your future career options, the activities you need to engage in to reach your chosen career path and the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitude required for this. It will equip you with essential skills to support you in seeking relevant part-time work or volunteering. You'll cover job searching, writing effective applications, interview skills and how to access information and support associated with your work placement and chosen career path.
Gain experience in the workplace, either paid or voluntary. You'll develop a greater understanding of the services offered to people accessing health and/or social care, the expectations of the workforce, and the skills needed to work in your chosen area.
Explore some of the social, economic and psychological factors which make certain groups at risk of poor health and others more likely to experience a sense of wellbeing in their lives. You'll work in the communications skills suite, receiving tuition on person-to-person communication skills; giving and receiving feedback, active listening, paraphrasing and reflecting feelings.
What you'll learn
Explore the key concepts, theories, models and approaches that underpin the discipline and contribute to subsequent learning. You will focus on developing essential academic skills for locating and retrieving academic resources for public health and health promotion.
Help your transition into higher education by developing your academic and professional skills necessary to successfully complete the course and become competent practitioners in a social care setting. You will be introduced to a range of skills which include: study skills, reflection, communication, working to deadlines, management of self and independent learning.
Study sociological theory, concepts and research that inform understandings of health and public health. Look at how social, cultural and structural factors shape the health of individuals and groups. You will engage with sociological perspectives on the social contexts and processes that shape a range of issues that are relevant to public health.
Gain an introduction to psychological theory, concepts and research relevant to health, health experience and health promotion. You will have the opportunity to engage with a number of theoretical perspectives in psychology and apply these to a range of contemporary public health issues in order to develop your understanding.
This module introduces you to a range of methods and types of data that can be used to answer public health questions. You will begin to think critically about using different types of data and methods to answer different questions and will practise applying your learning to simulated real life case studies.
This module enables you to think about what community and citizenship means, and the health needs of different groups and communities within society. You will have the opportunity to visit a range of community settings to understand the support and provision of the diverse third sector and its impact on and contribution to communities. You will also focus on how communities can be used as a mechanism for health and wellbeing improvement as well as the specific health inequalities, needs and challenges of particular communities.
What you'll learn
Build on the Year 1 'Investigating Health' module to develop further your understanding of the principles of research design, data collection and analysis, and critical appraisal skills. You will learn about commonly used quantitative and qualitative research study designs and data collection tools, including surveys/ questionnaires, interviews and focus groups.
Focus on a variety of contemporary issues in health and wellbeing in the context of a globalising world. Each week you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding about a specific topic. These topics are subject to change in order to keep up-to-date with the changing patterns of disease and global health concerns.
Through exploring a range of topics on mental health, you will become familiar with critical approaches to mental health in the context of a social justice framework. There is a strong emphasis on understanding the relevance and applying sociological theory that is intended to establish the basis for learning and ethical practice in diverse professional areas.
Focus on the variety of issues drawing upon health and welfare policy from within the UK. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding about the political nature of health, ideological influences upon the policy process and to debate health-related responsibilities within the broader context of UK policy.
Develop and enhance your communication skills for health across a number of domains to include interpersonal communication, using different media including print, mass media, electronic and social media. You will learn about communication theory and how this applies to communication for health in a range of contexts.
Develop skills in the organisation, delivery and evaluation of an intervention. This module combines lectures and seminars with practical experiences in a work-setting.
What you'll learn
Undertake a small scale practical research project. You will make use of your learning from the taught modules to develop your practical research skills through the planning, conducting and presentation of a research project relevant to public health.
Foster your skills, familiarity, and confidence to take on personal and organisational responsibilities. In a workplace context, you will be equipped with knowledge and practice in management, leadership and motivation approaches whilst at an individual level gaining insights into your own styles, preferences and experiences.
Building on some of the issues raised in previous modules, you will explore relevant topic areas in depth, enabling you to develop advanced skills in relation to public health and health promotion, engage in critical debates and ultimately move into advanced practice roles.
Discover the complexities of contemporary issues in health and well-being in the context of a globalising world. You will be encouraged to develop a critical and self-directed approach to each topic through the lens of current research.
Explore a range of contemporary global health issues and challenges in public health and health promotion. Building upon some of the issues raised in previous modules (such as Policy & Politics of Health and Contemporary Issues), you will look at relevant topic areas in depth enabling you to develop your knowledge and understanding of health challenges facing the world’s populations, as well as the distribution and determinants of health in populations with different social, economic and cultural characteristics.

- Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
- Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
