Growing numbers of tourism destinations are looking to create travel experiences that are characterised by excitement, risk and remoteness, and new geographies of tourism for new typologies of tourists which are emerging. 

This course has been specifically designed to equip you with a range of skills in response to the rapidly growing adventure tourism market. 

As part of your course, you’ll:

  • Develop a range of transferable skills through practical experiences both locally and abroad 
  • Become an informed thinker by considering sustainable places
  • Work with host communities to develop the business skills required to be a confident, ethically minded graduate who can excel in the tourism industry
  • Gain valuable experience in international tourism and specifically the adventure tourism industry

Do you love tourism and have a sense of adventure? Adventure tourism is one of the fastest growing niche sectors of the wider tourism industry.

Based in Leeds with easy access to a variety of adventure tourism destinations, this course will help you to unlock your individual talents and prepare you to manage and engage in all aspects of the adventure tourism operation.

We’ll provide you with current research informed thinking balanced against a programme of field work and practical activities to prepare you for the workplace. 

You’ll have access to our student societies that are regularly engaged in a variety of adventure tourism activities. These experiences are designed to allow you to build skills and knowledge in preparing you for a career in adventure tourism, and to have fun.

Your knowledge and understanding of the unique locations, host communities and sustainable practices required in this sector will enable you to become a confident, ethically minded and critically informed adventure tourism professional with the expertise to excel in this industry.

This course will maximise your exposure to practising industry professionals through opportunities such as field trips, your placement year and extra-curricular learning opportunities such as engagement with relevant external qualifications and short courses. Your development will be further supported by a range of industry-based assessments.

Industry partners
Key industry partners such as the Adventure Tourism Research Association (ATRA), Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), The Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT) and the Tourism Management Institute (TMI) will provide further opportunities to engage with employers through a variety of events, often hosted at the university. These could include guest presentations, networking events, graduate career fairs and collaboration to develop teaching materials.
