Gain a deep understanding of the issues and opportunities within travel and tourism including ethical, environmental and legal considerations. This course will prepare you to play a leading role in steering the sector towards a more responsible future.

As part of your course, you’ll:

  • Explore complex topics such as climate change, economic impacts, cultural encounters
  • Study the responsibility of tourism managers, stakeholders and destinations to create a greener industry that has a more positive impact on the planet
  • Use case studies which draw on recent events, such as the industry’s response to the refugee crisis and plastic pollution to look at how certain mechanisms within tourism, including activism, protest, consumer boycotts and political lobbying, are used to drive social change
  • Study aspects of globalisation and how governing bodies, tourism businesses, travellers and host communities influence tourism in the Global South
  • Explore and debate whether tourism is a force for good or whether it could be seen as a challenging industry

You’ll be taught by tourism experts who disseminate their research via articles, books and international conferences – research which will feed into your teaching.

You’ll benefit from our close links with the sector, including industry visits and regular opportunities to discuss current management challenges with guest speakers.

We are a member of many major industry associations, including The Tourism Management Institute, The Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT), and have been awarded TedQual certification (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) for our postgraduate course in responsible tourism management.

An optional work placement will offer you the knowledge and expertise that are in demand by travel and tourism employers.
