You’ll have the option of two pathways if you choose this course, both of which lead to qualified teacher status:
- BA (Hons) Primary Education (3-7)
- BA (Hons) Primary Education (5-11)
Over your three-year course you’ll develop as a skilled and confident primary teacher, committed to the needs of each child you meet. On the 3-7 pathway you’ll specialise in teaching children within the Early Years and Key Stage 1. On the 5-11 pathway, your focus will be on teaching children in Key Stage 1 and 2 within primary schools.
We’ll build your confidence to teach across all National Curriculum subjects, and the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) on the 3-7 pathway. You’ll study tailored modules that will offer a wide range of creative and inclusive approaches to learning.
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Develop your subject knowledge and learn how to teach English, mathematics, science and the full range of Foundation subjects in your chosen age range
- Gain an in-depth understanding of teaching and learning within your chosen age range
- Take an holistic approach to nurturing young learners and apply the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage on the 3-7 pathway
- Understand how children learn, and respond to the needs of pupils aged 3-11 by adapting your teaching approaches to meet their individual requirements
- Form your own teacher identity as you develop through placements in every year of the course
- Take a creative and inclusive approach to your teaching practice
- Become a research-informed teacher through your own practitioner enquiry project in your final year
Placements
You’ll learn both in university and via school placements. Through our guidance and with expert mentoring, you’ll develop your teaching skills and become the teacher you aspire to be.
Build your practical experience
We have partnerships with more than 150 schools in the Leeds and wider region. You’ll spend a minimum of eight weeks each year in school placement which is organised and supported by the course team. Our strong partnership links mean that you’ll experience a variety of settings and learn from expert mentors. There will be self-funded opportunities for a voluntary and short international placement in your summer break.
Learn across a range of settings
You’ll learn both inside and outside the classroom. Forest School training will be offered on campus and you’ll have occasional focused visits to schools and other educational settings. You’ll also have the opportunity to take an option module in your third year. Options could include outdoor learning, subject leadership in the primary school and creative arts.
Your assessment
You won’t take any exams during this course. Your progress will instead be measured through coursework and a range of creative assessments.

Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.
Self Declaration Check
You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.
Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Teaching & Learning
What you'll learn
Develop your knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning of language, communication and literacy in a primary school setting. You'll learn through teaching sessions and directed study. This module will enable you to gain personal understanding and competence in your English subject knowledge for teaching.
Hone your knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning of mathematics in a primary school setting. You'll learn through taught sessions and directed study. This module will enable you to gain personal understanding and competence in your mathematics subject knowledge for teaching. You'll have develop your knowledge of a range of approaches for teaching mathematics.
Explore the 3-11 curriculum and develop your understanding of the rationale for each curriculum area. If you are a student teacher on the 3-7 pathway, you'll focus on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Areas of Learning. If you're on the 5-11 pathway, you'll consider the National Curriculum at KS1 and KS2 including religious education. You'll develop both your personal subject knowledge and the related knowledge to deliver high-quality teaching in each subject area.
This module will support you as you become a student teacher. You'll explore your personal academic journey and the influences you've encountered. We'll encourage you to connect your understanding of learning in a personal, professional and education policy context. You'll demonstrate your ability to reflect through a creative presentation.
Prepare you for professional practice through a series of taught sessions which focus on how to get ready for teaching. We'll guide the development of the skills you'll need to begin planning, teaching and assessing learning in the primary classroom.
What you'll learn
You'll learn through subject-specific teaching in a cluster of STEM related subjects along with physical education (PE). You'll attend subject-specific lectures and seminars for mathematics, science, PE, geography, computing and design and technology supported by a generic lecture programme. You'll be encouraged to teach each of these subjects, if available, in placement to link your theoretical and practice-informed understanding.
You'll learn through subject-specific teaching in a cluster of arts-related subjects along with physical education (PE). You'll attend subject-specific lectures and seminars for mathematics, science, PE, geography, computing and design and technology supported by a generic lecture programme. We'll focus on a raising aspirations day which will enable you to work with visiting pupils for creative and cross-curricular learning. You'll be encouraged to teach each of these subjects, if available, in placement to link your theoretical and practice-informed understanding.
This module will support your journey to becoming an inclusive practitioner. We'll explore your developing understanding of inclusive practice within the current education policy context. You'll examine and critique your developing pedagogical practice as we support you in articulating your personal standpoint in relation to issues of inclusive practice.
Prepare you for year two professional practice. We'll guide the development of the skills you'll need to hone your planning, teaching and assessing learning in the primary classroom.
What you'll learn
Consolidate your year one and two subject knowledge and understanding of subject content. You'll develop deeper knowledge of critical issues within the teaching of subjects in a primary learning environment. This will ensure you'll secure a comprehensive knowledge of all curriculum subjects and address areas of personal weakness. We'll explore the important role English and maths has in the primary curriculum alongside a focus on the wider curriculum subjects. You'll select, gather, critically evaluate and organise data from a wide range of primary and secondary sources. You'll demonstrate comprehensive subject, curricular and pedagogic knowledge and understanding for teaching in your chosen age phase.
Build on the knowledge and skills gained across your course. You'll explore a specific approach to delivering learning within the primary learning environment in greater depth, with a chosen elective focus. You'll develop your understanding of leadership through a group filmed project exploring the teaching and learning in your chosen subject area. This module will enable you to collaborate and develop your own interests as you draw on the expertise of your group.
You'll be supported in exploring a subject of your choice to deepen your understanding of education. You'll develop your critical analysis skills through the design and implementation of a small-scale research study.
Prepare you for year three professional practice. We'll guide the development of the skills you'll need to hone your planning, teaching and assessing learning in the primary classroom.

These visits are local and are accessible by public transport. You will need to make your own arrangements and pay for your own travel / transport to these sites
- Placement travel costs. You will need to cover the costs to travel to / from unpaid work placements, including nine weeks in year 1, seven weeks in year 2 and nine weeks in year 3. You will be kept as close as possible to your term-time address and / or you can request placements close to your family home if this helps with costs. Placements will need to meet the standards of the Course Teaching Partnership

Career Prospects
You’ll have achieved qualified teacher status and will be able to teach pupils across the 3-11 age range on completion of this course. Most of our graduates enter the teaching profession as early career teachers, but a degree in primary education can lead to other careers in the sector, including:

Sarah Hindmarsh is Course Director for Undergraduate Primary Education courses, 3-7 and 5-11 at Leeds Beckett. Sarah leads a team of undergraduate tutors and has a specialism in primary science which she teaches in a range of modules.
