This integrated foundation year will enable you to transition onto our BA (Hons) Social Work course. It will also help you prepare for academic life at university.
As part of the foundation year, you’ll:
- Study health and community studies-related modules that will give you a broad understanding of the multi-disciplinary health and social care sector
- Study additional modules that will help you develop the academic and study skills you’ll need to successfully transition from school, college or the workplace into higher education

Selection Criteria
We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements. You would normally need significant relevant social care experience and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Social Work profession. You will need to relate your experience to the contemporary setting in which Social Workers operate. You will also need to provide a social care reference. Selection criteria will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements and only if you are successful at this stage will you be invited to an interview day.
Interview Required
We conduct interviews as part of the admissions process. Interviews will be held between November and March. Invitations are sent via UCAS and you should check your UCAS Track account for further details. Interview days will involve an individual interview, assessment session and group work exercise. Applicants will be required to bring to interview photographic ID (Passport, Driving Licence) and original certificates for all qualifications awarded to date. If you do not possess your original certificates, we recommend making arrangements to obtain copies in preparation should you be invited to a selection day.

DBS Check
Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.
Self Declaration Check
You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.
Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. Our university welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. All students will be considered through the contextual admissions policy described above. If you do not meet the requirements through the contextual admissions policy, we may still be able to make you an offer if you have recent relevant work experience through our ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ policy. Please ensure that you list both your qualifications and any relevant work experience in your application so that we can consider you under both schemes where applicable..

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Teaching & Learning
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic we are currently unable to advise on the mode of teaching for September 2021, however we will keep you updated and provide more information as soon as we can. We continue to follow government guidance and your teaching and learning will reflect the restrictions in place at the time of delivery. We currently anticipate that you may experience a blended approach – this is a mix of face-to-face, on campus and online teaching and learning. What you'll learn
This module will enable you to transition from different educational backgrounds to achieve success in your chosen degree. You'll learn how to access information and support associated with your studies in Higher Education, to help you develop study skills and practices.
This module will provide an overview of health and social care and introduce you to a wide range of professions, roles and responsibilities of people working in this field. You'll gain an understanding of aspects of policy and the key influences that affect the delivery of health and social care services in the UK. You'll also be introduced to some of the challenges and contemporary issues in the sector.
This module will allow you to reflect on your future career options, the activities you need to engage in to reach your chosen career path and the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitude required for this. It will equip you with essential skills to support you in seeking relevant part-time work or volunteering. You'll cover job searching, writing effective applications, interview skills and how to access information and support associated with your work placement and chosen career path.
Gain experience in the workplace, either paid or voluntary. You'll develop a greater understanding of the services offered to people accessing health and/or social care, the expectations of the workforce, and the skills needed to work in your chosen area.
This module introduces key theoretical approaches used in the social sciences to understand modern society. You'll develop an awareness of human development and the lifespan and the impact social factors have on the life chances of individuals and groups in society.
What you'll learn
This module will introduce you to the historical development of social work; with reference to the contemporary role, values and theories that underpin social work practice.
Develop your knowledge and understanding of key pieces of legislation and case law. You'll be introduced to the Human Rights Act and Articles of the European Convention of Human Rights and you'll gain an understanding of the relationship between law, society and social work practice.
This module addresses the issue of transition to university-level study in general and the specific skills and attributes required to progress towards qualification as a social worker, with an emphasis on communication. It meets social work professional requirements relating to readiness for practice.
To introduce students to the historical development of social work; with reference to the contemporary role, values and theories that underpin social work practice.
Develop knowledge and understanding of oppression and discrimination within society as well as identifying skills and approaches and to social work practice which seeks to challenge discrimination and which overcome the effects of inequality and oppression.

Support contemporary social work practice through exploring thematic areas that underpin social work practice.
Undertake a 70 day placement in a local agency providing social care services, testing your own capability to undertake a range of relevant social work roles in predominantly less complex situations with supervision and support.
Evaluate key policy issues and legislative frameworks in adult social care and explores the challenges of safeguarding and empowering practices with a range of adult social care user groups.
Study the professional, ethical and legal principles that underpin social work with children, young people and their families. The module incorporates interdisciplinary learning opportunities to facilitate your understanding of professional roles and responsibilities in the important area of child safeguarding.
Build your knowledge and understanding of key methods, approaches and evidence based practice within contemporary social work. You will study underpinning research and theory that informs a range of approaches and methods of intervention in best social work practice. The module gives students the opportunity to analyse the applicability of the identified methods of intervention within a range of social work contexts and across different service user groups. You will have the opportunity within the module to apply your learning to your practice situations.
What you'll learn
Explore the professional, ethical and legal principles that underpin social work with vulnerable adults and children, people who lack mental capacity and the mentally ill and explore the relevance of power and context for decision making and ethical judgements in social work practice.
Develop your critical awareness of professional skills needed to build personal and professional identity in a complex and changing social work environment establishing skills for lifelong learning and qualifying practice.
Undertake a 100 day placement in a local agency providing statutory social work services, testing your own capability to undertake a range of relevant social work roles in more complex situations.
Discover social work in a global context - you will explore critically the impact of globalisation on local social work practice; with reference to themes such as inequality, migration, and human trafficking.

Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
