Kate Fletcher will discuss how current fashion sector activities approach ecosystem health, largely as an operational issue and nature as dead resource.
Typically, fashion industry needs are placed at the top of a hierarchy and nature at the bottom - if it is even considered at all.
In this talk, a new fashion-nature relationship is enacted which moves beyond more ‘nature-friendly’ decisions slotted into the conventional system. As essentially it is the conventional system itself and its lack of recognition of ecological limits, its preference for mechanistic control and its view of human superiority over other species, which is the problem.
Fletcher will unfold the lines of interdependence and care with diverse opportunities for changed fashion provision and expression. Throughout she will make reference to projects including Fashion Ecologies, Earth Logic and Wild Dress.
