Britain has historically demanded thankfulness from those whom it enslaved, emancipated, and colonised. The expectation for gratitude was defined by discourses on race, as noted by writers of colour in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and it remains active today in anti-immigration and racist discourses of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
