Everyday Stigma, Everyday Shame
It’s hard to escape reality television - the makeover in particular so dominates primetime viewing that we are all familiar with the ‘before and after’ narrative. Are they just benign entertainment or can makeovers tell us something about changing ideals of contemporary citizenship? Drawing on weight-loss shows and anti-ageing makeovers, this lecture explains how a critical reading of these programmes is possible and necessary.

Jayne Raisborough is Professor of Media in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
