Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard: Getting away with it
Leeds School of Arts welcomes Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard for an honest look at what it really means to be an artist.

All artists like to talk about what they do. But for this session, we want to take an honest look at why we do what we do. Let’s talk about the stuff that normally isn’t talked about, and let’s think about what it really means to be an artist. Let’s explore the things that have shaped and influenced us — the what, and the who. The random, chance encounters to the major lifelong obsessions. Let’s also talk about the relationships and collaborations that have come to inform and define our practice. From Adam Ant to Samuel Beckett, from the Assistant Membership Officer at the ICA to Nick Cave… these are the things and the people who have made us who we are.

The INSIDE/OUT public programme of lectures invites speakers and leading thinkers whose breadth of work, practice, thought and collaboration we feel will inspire all our students and staff across the wide range of disciplines in the Leeds School of Arts.

Lectures will be available as digital films through the LARC website and open to all.

Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard have worked collaboratively as artists, filmmakers and curators since meeting at Goldsmiths in the mid-nineties. Their BAFTA nominated debut feature, ’20,000 Days on Earth’ is a creative documentary about Nick Cave. It premiered at Sundance in 2014, winning Directing and Editing awards. The Sundance jury said: “This is documentary storytelling at it’s most visionary and mind-blowing”. The same year, they won the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards. They recently co-curated The Horror Show: A Twisted Tale of Modern Britain at Somerset House.

Iain and Jane have been telling stories about music and with musicians for their entire career. Their diverse range of collaborators include Scott Walker, Gil Scott-Heron, Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker. They directed and co-wrote ‘Neil Gaiman's Likely Stories’ for Sky, and currently have films in development with the BFI and Film 4. Their artwork is collected by museums and institutions around the world including Tate Modern and the British Government Art Collection
