Studying in a new country is an exciting opportunity to meet new people. But moving away from home and settling into a new environment can also be a little intimidating. The first thing to remember is that you are not alone! Your fellow students are in the same situation as you, and most of them are just as excited to make friends as you are. Plus, our super-friendly International Social Network is here to help you quickly become part of the #BeckettGlobal community.
International Online Welcome Week
We are preparing an exciting International Online Welcome Week programme for you, with all of the support you’ll need to get off to a great start at Leeds Beckett. We will provide updated information about this soon!
My advice is to get involved as much as you can with social activities. Joining a society or volunteering are fantastic ways to make friends and has such a positive impact on your social life.

Become an International Buddy
Do you want to help new students settle into their life at University? Make new friends from around the world? Develop skills that will look great on your CV? Then why not become an International Student Buddy?
Adjusting to a new cultural environment can be both exciting and challenging. New international students at our university will often have many questions and concerns during their first weeks on campus. We are looking for current students to help ease the transition, helping students to settle into life in the UK, Leeds and our university. You will work with the International Social Network to provide a friendly contact point for advice, organise group activities, and more.
Students who take part will also receive a certificate for participation in the programme.
Interested? Apply by emailing the International Social Network with your details:
- Student ID
- Email address
If you are a new student starting in September and would like to connect with a buddy, please contact the International Social Network!
Join a Society
Our Students’ Union is run by students like you. There are dozens of clubs, societies, and events based on your interests. It’s a great way to make new friends through virtual pub quizzes and online meetups! View the full list of societies on the Students’ Union website.
Get a gym membership
With a variety of fitness classes, our gyms are a great place to meet new people. You could book a tennis court with friends or take part in team games. This is a great way to socialise and keep fit! Learn more about gym memberships on our Sport and Active Lifestyles website.
Be a Student Ambassador
Many international students join our Student Ambassador programme. Get paid to get involved with university events, giving campus tours to prospective students, and support your fellow international students before, during and after their time at Leeds Beckett! Many of our ambassadors make friends for life through this programme. We will recruit new ambassadors in October and February. To find out more, please email our International Social Network.
