Leap
For creative students, imaginative leaps are essential to challenging the way we view the world around us. We encourage students to go off on a tangent, surprising the viewer or making what Viktor Shklovsky (The Russian literary theorist) termed the ‘knight’s move’, two moves forward and then suddenly veering off on a new trajectory, which he saw as a metaphor for artistic innovation. Yves Klein’s photograph of 1960 famously shows the artist soaring from a building and leaping in to the void on an act of faith and a carefully crafted photomontage statement, that demonstrated his ability to take possession of space.
