We are Creative Technologies

We are one of the subject areas in the Leeds School of Arts at Leeds Beckett University. We are a diverse area with undergraduate BSc (hons) degrees in Broadcast Media Technologies, Creative Media Technology, Digital Journalism, and Games Design. In September 2020 we launch our new BA (hons) in Games Art and in 2021, our new BSc (hons) in Digital Visual Effects. For students who want to continue with their studies, or any practitioner that wishes to develop and enhance their skills, or even require a postgraduate qualification to progress, we also offer a taught MSc in Creative Technology.

All our awards have been developed with the growth and development of the digital economy in mind. Leeds has been recognised as one of the key cities in the UK for the creative industries, and is a thriving digital and creative hub. Channel 4 chose Leeds as the location of their national HQ, with other supporting industries following them. This has further reinforced the city’s position. These industries are keen to attract our Creative Technology students for just for future employment, but also placements and other projects which further enhances their employability. In turn, we value and require the input from local employers and alumni to ensure our awards remain current in a rapidly moving area. Leeds is a dynamic, modern and attractive city in which to study and after graduating, many of our students chose to stay in the locality because of the opportunities offered by this fast-paced digital city.

Our course teaching teams are small and specialised and largely composed of practitioners and experienced academics who will challenge students in both teaching, learning and with innovative assessments. These teams proteose student support and that comes by knowing and understanding students. We also have significant links with local and national organisations. This networking is invaluable and provides our students with a number of opportunities. We also have an active alumni who give time in the form of guest lectures, workshops and placements.

In terms of activities and opportunities, we are members of the Game Republic and every year we take students to the Student Showcase Competition with many winning awards from the industry judges. Our Broadcast Media and Digital Journalism students have been involved in the very prestigious Audio & Radio Academy Awards (ARIAS) in Leeds. Additionally, our Digital Journalists can practise their skills with Be Media, our Students' Unions student-led media project. They provide support and industry links for budding writers, designers, presenters, producers, editors and photographers. Our Broadcast Media students will have opportunities to work with professional broadcasters and our in-house media training facility on collaborative projects and our Creative Media students regularly present their work in front of a panel of tutors and industry professionals, with students finding jobs with Disney Interactive Studios, Sky TV and many digital agencies. So, check out our online prospectus for further details and we would be delighted to help you with any queries about our awards.
