The MFA Filmmaking extends the MA Filmmaking experience and focuses on the learning path of the individual film practitioner. Each student becomes a creative leader, mapping out their own area of study and the project that they will make to demonstrate their learning. They are encouraged to push their boundaries, to focus upon aspects of filmmaking and storytelling they are passionate about and will form their identity in the industry. The result of this process is that each film emerges as unique, with some impressive entries in the Northern Film School catalogue having been achieved in recent years.
Three films were made on this years MFA, with generous support from BA and MA students. Shot over summer 2019, they are each the result of committed filmmakers who were encouraged to leave their comfort zones and explore people, places and issues that challenged. Some important social issues are highlighted here - from the plight of unregistered migrants in the UK (Anna) to the preconceptions facing war veterans (Walter) - as well as the human drama of a romantic couple in a Viennese cafe, trying to decide their future (Melange).
