Sofía García Galván / Games Design
Hello! I’m Sofia and I’m a 3rd year Games Design student. I moved to the UK 3 years ago to pursue a career in games. I started University with very little knowledge of game design, 3D modelling or programming, but I had a passion for art and storytelling through an interactive medium. Studying at Leeds Beckett University has given me the chance to learn from industry professionals and develop my portfolio, as well as discover my passion for games. My end project ‘Five Finger Di$count’ shows off my passion for creating character concepts and I’m happy how they turned out as fully animated 3D characters in collaboration with my team members.
My focus is mostly 2D and 3D assets and characters, as well as game studies. My favourite piece of artwork to date is my mandrake sculpt. Inspired by the old legend of the shrieking mandrake that talks about them emitting an ear-piercing scream if uprooted that would kill the person who digs it up, I attempted to design a character rooted on these old stories but giving my own style and perspective on it. Another of my favourite pieces of work I have done is an essay titled “Keep Politics Out Of My Videogames”, where I do a deep dive into the portrayal of values and political ideologies within games and the “gamer” community.
As a Games Design ambassador, my main advice I give to future students is to not take University for granted. The three years will fly by, so take every opportunity you are given and make the most of your lectures and tutorials. I have nothing but good things to say about the tutors in this course who have always gone out of their way to help me with my work.
