We are The Northern Film School

We are the Northern Film School, housed in the School of Arts at Leeds Beckett University. We are one of the best-known film and television schools in the UK attracting students from around the world. We have been making innovative and award winning films for over 25 years, offering a breadth of practice based filmmaking courses at BA (Hons), MA and PhD levels where we teach our students the precise technical skills necessary for filmmaking alongside a developing understanding of film language and the complexities of its grammar. We want our students to have the opportunity to be as creative as possible. We want them to experiment and take risks. We want to develop an informed and independent voice. We want our students to tell the stories that matter to them.

This is a particularly buoyant time for the Screen Industry sector, and our strong industry partnerships with Screen Yorkshire, ITV Yorkshire, the BBC, RTS Yorkshire, ScreenSkills and the many independent production companies in Leeds, enables the Northern Film School to be at the centre of a growth industry. The increasing significance of the ‘North’ in the Creative Industries, in particular, Yorkshire and the Humber, is more visible than ever, with Channel 4 locating its National HQ in Leeds and the development of a strong and fast-growing production sector in cities across the North of England. Leeds has been recognised nationally as a thriving digital creative hub and an exciting, cultural city for students and, importantly, graduates. It is well placed for students who understand the increasing significance of the role of visual storytelling and want to contribute to this growing community.
