You love winter

If you love winter, you’ll love what Leeds has to offer during this time of the year. When 1 December hits, Leeds transforms into a winter wonderland. Well, kind of. The temperature drops, the city becomes a full of lights and festive decorations with lots of low-cost activities for you to get involved in. From the bustling Christmas markets to traditional Christmas pantos, Leeds has it all in winter.


There are so many options when it comes to Christmas shopping in Leeds. Whether you’re on a hunt for a bargain or wanting to treat that special someone to something with a designer label, Leeds has you covered.

Trinity Leeds

One of the main shopping centres in Leeds. It has a wide variety of high street clothing shops, restaurants and a cinema. You can make a day of your Christmas shopping here that’s for sure! Many of the shops also offer student discounts which is great for keeping the cost down.


Victoria Gate

One of Leeds’s newest additions. If you’re looking for a higher end, premium Christmas shopping experience then this is the place for you. It is home to some of the top designer clothing and homeware stores, as well as some of the most beautiful grand architecture in Leeds.


Kirkgate Markets

One of the most authentic, character filled markets in Leeds. This large indoor haven has a variety of fun, quirky stalls to pick up original Christmas gifts that you are not going to find anywhere else. Impress your family and friends with organic food related gifts or sustainable homeware gifts fresh from the market for a reasonable price.

Christmas Markets 

What better way to get yourself in the Christmas spirit than to visit the German Christmas markets based in Millennium Square? The Christkindelmarkt is full of traditional wooden stalls selling a mixture of German and English food, drinks, jewellery and more. Tuck into a yummy frankfurter, paired with a glass of warming Gluhwein for an authentic German market experience. The market has something for all ages, so whether you are visiting with friends or family, it is a great day out. Best of all, it’s free entry!

Ice Skating 

Looking for a fun and entertaining winter activity to do with friends? Ice skating could fit the bill. Leeds has lots of ice related activities from ice rinks to rides and sport. Whether you’re a natural on the ice or prefer to stand on the side-lines, there is something for you.

Ice Cube

This is a temporary outdoor ice rink, constructed in Millennium Square every year. Join the conga shuffle around the edge or glide around like a pro. Whatever your skating ability, the Ice Cube is great fun. It’s also much more than just an ice rink, with ice themed rides to enjoy too.


Planet Ice - Leeds Chiefs

Prefer to stay off the ice? Leeds recently established its own ice skating team and their home turf is at Planet Ice, Elland Road, a large indoor ice-skating rink. You can watch a hockey match here or enjoy watching friends skate around during free skate sessions.


The theatres in Leeds are buzzing at winter time, packed full of festive cheer and laughter. Discover the wide variety of sell-out shows from traditional panto’s to musicals this winter.

Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House

Famous for its impressive interior design and decorative Victorian era features. This winter the Northern Ballet are performing their version of Cinderella from 17 December - 2 January.


Leeds Playhouse

One of the more modern theatres in Leeds, having been a production house for almost 30 years. It has recently undergone a development and the new building is something to shout about. If you’re in the mood for some festive fun, the classical musical The Wizard of Oz will be playing from the 20 November – 25 January.



There is so much to do when it comes to family fun this winter. A traditional pantomime is a great way to sing and dance your way into Christmas and there is one showing at the Carriageworks this winter. Sleeping Beauty is on stage from the 22nd Nov – 4th January.

Winter Experience

These are popping up all over Leeds this year. Enjoy a drink in the Nordic themed Thor’s tipi bar snuggled around the cosy fire. Or maybe you would prefer somewhere that involves dancing and drag queens?  Another tipi experience is at the Hinterland Winter Festival. A selection of Christmas themed tipi’s filled with music, Christmas dinner and a live band. There are also day time winter experiences to enjoy around Leeds too. Take a woodland walk at Lotherton Hall or take part in some Christmas crafts at Temple Newsam.
