Leeds Beckett University rugby league players called up to international duty

Leeds Beckett University students and alumni are set to test themselves against the best players in the world in their upcoming international rugby league fixtures.

Betfred Super League Grand Final winner Alex Walmsley headlines the elite list of players set to compete this autumn, with his inclusion in the 26-man Great Britain squad.

The GB Lions are returning to international duty after a 12 year hiatus.

The team’s return will see them tour Australasia, competing against other nations such as Papua New Guinea and Tonga alongside their three Test match series against New Zealand.

Alex’s selection comes off the back of a stellar Betfred Super League season with St Helens, which saw them complete a Grand Final and league double win, with the team finishing the league season a record breaking 16 points ahead of second place.

Alex will be hoping to cap off an incredible campaign with victory in Great Britain colours.

Students to shine at RL Nines World Cup

Five Leeds Beckett University students will compete at the upcoming Downer Rugby League Nines World Cup, to be played in Australia on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 October.

Welshmen Cobi Green, Connor Davies and Curtis Davies have been selected for their nation and will compete against the top eleven nations in the world.

Leeds Beckett University will have two students competing for the England Women's team in the Nines World Cup and three students for their upcoming tour of Papua New Guinea later this month.

Castleford Tigers star Kelsey Gentles, who competed in the Women's Super League Grand Final against Leeds, has been selected for England's Nines World Cup squad alongside St Helens' Leah Burke.

The St Helens flier has been in scintillating form in the Betfred Women’s Super League this season and has been a key member of the university’s women’s rugby union team, where she plays as a flanker.

Leah's England selection saw her miss the team’s first ever appearance in the Leeds Varsity Finale at Emerald Headingley Stadium and will be looking to test herself at international level.

After the Nines competition, England will compete in two test matches against Papua New Guinea, which will feature Leah, Kelsey and Kelsey's Castleford Tigers teammate Tamzin Renouf.

The Nines Competition will be live on Sky Sports Arena, with coverage set to start from 08:20 on Friday 18 October.

Meanwhile, student James Mulhern has been selected in Ireland's squad for their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers fixtures. Mulhern joins a 37 man train on squad ahead of their Pool A games against Italy and Spain. The top two teams in the group will automatically qualify for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

The Nines Competition will be live on Sky Sports Arena, with coverage set to start from 08:20 on Friday 18 October.

Good luck to all involved in the upcoming international fixtures.
